Speedball 25th anniversary publication

I was delighted to be asked if one of my Owen Jones inspired illuminated letters could be included in the 25th anniversary edition of the Speedball Magazine (an American publication). It appears on page 105!

2018 Workshops

2018 was a busy year filled with my weekly calligraphy classes, exhibitions, commissions and onsite work. In addition to the weekly classes I teach I was delighted to host/teach the following all day, sold out, workshops :

24 February “Express yourself” for Weald Scribes. An introduction to making folded cola pens and the joys of folded pen lettering. We included monoprints using suminagashi and shaving foam!

28 April - Bold Neuland. for Weald Scribes. An all day workshop teaching the wonderful Neuland script devised by Rudolf Koch.

12 May - “It’s a kind of magic” for Sussex Scribes. A workshop introducing the joys of folded pen work after a morning creating monoprints using suminagashi.

15 September - “Retro Deco” with Gemma Black. What a delight it was to welcome my calligraphy friend all the way from Tasmania to teach her acclaimed workshop which has travelled the world.

3 November “An introduction to Foundational script” for The National Archives, Kew, London. A delight to introduce new learners to broad edge pen calligraphy. Everyone made a keepsake to take away.

8 December “Pointed pen Uncial with a Festive Twist” for Weald Scribes. What fun we had learning this beautiful script devised by Mike Kecseg, creating envelopes, cards, tags and gift wrap!

Tina Warren Calligraphy at The Garden Show in Firle

I am delighted to be exhibiting at The Garden Show in Firle again 20 April - 22 April 2018. I will have originals, prints and cards for sale and my pens will be working too! Come and find me, alongside other crafts folk, in the Georgian Riding School. A great day out with many things to do and see - everything for the garden - plants, ornaments, garden craft, artists, clothing, artisan food and drinks, Firle House and its grounds. Come and say Hi!

So long 2017 .....

So long 2017 - it was a productive and fun year! I was fortunate enough to be snowed under with regular commissioned work. In the main this is formal calligraphy on vellum but I also had some contemporary commissions as well. Updating Books of Memory includes a wide array of miniature illustrations to accompany the calligraphy.

I enjoyed several art fairs and exhibitions - the Garden Show in Firle is a regular and you can always find me in the Georgian Riding School selling my originals, prints and cards. I have a little something new up my sleeve for 2018! The Christmas Fayre season was a busy one selling over 100 personalised baubles with handmade Christmas cards and prints as well.  I thoroughly enjoyed my first year at the Lewes Artists and Makers Fayre - some new ideas in the pipeline for 2018 already!

I am always happy to be invited to event calligraphy and this year I enjoyed a couple of days at Claridges Hotel for the American Academy of Achievement as well as personalising merchandise.

My 3 weekly classes remain busy with wonderful calligraphy and lettering art being produced. This year also saw some of my learners submit work for the CLAS Certificate of Calligraphy with fantastic results. Workshops continue to support the learning in weekly classes by introducing new scripts and techniques. Weekly classes present the ideal opportunity to fine tune and hone new skills and tackle projects. 2017 workshops included the lettering of David Jones, Sharpened Italic, Introduction to Flat Gilding, Copperplate, Pointed Pen Art, Book Making with Helen Gibbs and Embossing with Jan Pickett.

And so I am looking forward to a busy 2018. I am attending some workshops for a change and am very excited to welcome Gemma Black to teach my Weald Scribes when she is in the UK next summer. Happy New Year and may your ink flow!

Weald Scribes enjoy a day of book making!

On 6 May 2017 Weald Scribes enjoyed a day of book making. Local book binder and teacher, Helen Gibbs, joined us as our "travelling tutor". The class moved from simple cut and folded books to making concertina flag books and a stitched book. These simple books are a delight to combine with calligraphy and lettering to create 3D structures! We can't wait to invite Helen back to share further book making techniques and increase our repertoire!

Acts of Parliament to remain being printed on Vellum

Hoorah! Many thanks to Patricia Lovett for spearheading the campaign for Acts of Parliament to continue to be printed on vellum. Calligraphers like myself canvassed our MP's to vote to continue using vellum. On 20 April the debate resulted in resounding approval for this tradition to continue. The reasons are multitude : it's longevity, it is a green product, making vellum is a heritage craft, it is a quality substrate to work on etc. All my vellum comes from William Cowley in Newport Pagnell and I am proud to say I have been using their vellum since 1995. Long may this tradition continue! You can read more about it here :

Alphabition calligraphy and the wedding season!

Spring is here and with that the beginning of the wedding season. Whilst addressing invitations and writing out place cards is a year round activity for me as a calligrapher, Spring always heralds the beginning of a new wedding season. Your wedding invitation is often the first peep your guests will receive into your special event. Having your invitations, envelopes, place setting and table plan prepared by a calligrapher will enhance your special day. It gets busy so plan ahead and book soon!
