I am delighted to be teaching an introductory calligraphy workshop for Anne of Cleves House in Lewes.

Have you ever wanted to learn the fascinating art of calligraphy? This hands-on workshop could be just for you.

Edward Johnson, widely regarded as the father of modern day calligraphy, devised the Foundational Script in the first half of the 20th century based on studies of a late Carolingian manuscript known as the Ramsey Psalter.

Using a broad-edged dip pen you will be taught this script by calligrapher and lettering artist Tina Warren. The workshop will include practical exercises and is suitable for complete beginners. Participants will take away their own written pieces, as well as an increased confidence in this beautiful art.

I am delighted to be teaching an all day workshop at CC's Emporium in Billingshurst. Have you ever wanted to try your hand at calligraphy? Maybe it's for a wedding or just writing out beautiful gift tags! Here's your chance to learn in a small, friendly environment with all tools, materials and lunch provided. Using traditional dip pens you will be introduced to basic strokes, leading to letter formation and cursive writing. There will be the opportunity to work on a small project for you to take away with your equipment. CC's are offering an "early bird" discount. Come and join me to learn the gentle French Ronde script - also known as Redondilla in Spain or Engrossers script. A beautiful, versatile script with ligatures written with a broad edge pen. You will learn the miniscule alphabet and be introduced to the majuscules. In the afternoon we will all blossom as we learn to paint flowers using water colour or gouache with a dagger brush to combine with the script and produce a piece of work to take home.

Delighted to invite Joy Daniels to teach Celtic Knots for Weald Scribes. Suitable for all levels - no calligraphic experience needed! During this workshop Joy will be teaching us how to draw Celtic Knots. They are endlessly useful for borders and to compliment calligraphy pieces you may be working on (not just Uncial!)

Come along and learn how to unravel the intricacies of the Celtic Knot and design your own knot work pattern.  With a few simple rules and a square grid you will discover how to construct the simplest knot and then build on this to make more complicated patterns as the day goes on.  Use these patterns with calligraphy, stone carving, lino cuts, stencils, embroidery, knitting etc ., or just on their own as a beautiful design.

"Pointed Pen Uncial with a Festive Twist". Originally designed by Mike Kecseg, Pointed Pen Uncial takes its reference from slanted broad pen Uncial. It's a great introduction to the pointed pen, really versatile and great fun so do come along if you can. “It’s a kind of magic!”

A workshop combining a morning working with bleach and ink followed by an afternoon experimenting with the folded pen.

We’ll start off with a squirt of bleach – what will it reveal? This will be followed by floating sumi ink on still water to create stunning marbled paper – each piece unique!

In the afternoon we will explore the wonderful mark making properties of the folded pen – a great tool that happily skips along the surface of textured paper and teams up well with suminagashi paper. Drawing on techniques learned from traditional scripts we will loosen up and break some rules! For those who have not made a cola pen we can also make one of these to use.

What : Neualand! A fun, bold and versatile sans serif script devised by Rudolf Koch. We will look at variations and different techniques. Looks great teemed up with contrasting scripts/writing.

What : "Express Yourself! - gestural writing".  You've learned the rules and now you're being invited to break them! In this workshop we will explore gestural lettering with various writing tools from folded cola can nibs, architect ruling pens, automatic pens, pointed nibs, felt, mount board, balsa wood through to broad edge brushes. We will manipulate some of the classic lettering styles in an informed way looking at texture and pattern. I will have some equipment for sale.

Can’t decide between paper or vellum?  Is it parchment or vellum?  Not worked on vellum before?  Worried it’s too technical/too scary/too expensive/you’ll get it wrong?   Tina will give the benefit of her 20 years’ experience with wonderful vellum and help allay the above worries.  NB we will not be stretching vellum.

Beautiful to write and paint on, the advantages of vellum are its longevity, translucency and it’s uniqueness – no two pieces are the same.  It is also more forgiving than paper to make corrections on. By the end of the day you’ll feel more confident making a choice between paper and vellum.

You will be able to study different types of parchment and vellum; experiment on a small piece of flat vellum by raising the nap and make corrections and erasures.  Those who wish can make a start on a ‘finished’ piece of prepared vellum 21×13 cm.  A very short quote or small, simple piece of illumination 10×10 cm.

All the design and layout for this MUST be done prior to the workshop as there won’t be time on the day to look at design issues. TOP TIP – keep it very simple.

"All that glitters!" - The addition of gold to a simple or elaborate piece of work always draws gasps of admiration! This workshop introduces gilding with the intention of making an Illuminated letter.

Once or twice a year I invite in a "travelling calligrapher" to teach a workshop to Weald Scribes. I am delighted that Jan Pickett is coming to share her enthusiasm with us and teach embossed lettering. 

Embossed surfaces cast subtle shadows, giving an appearance of quality wherever used. We combine this with some colour also extra cutting, creating unique 'built up' designs, with extra pzazz!

The painted inscriptions of David Jones have enjoyed a "Renaissance". Whilst taking his reference from historical and classical letter forms, David Jones introduced an informality into his drawn and painted letters which, not only leave them looking contemporary, but make them so versatile to use. We will study the technique David Jones used and add our own “twist”! At the end of the day you should leave with a painted quote.

A creative day learning not one but TWO informal scripts. TinaKwerky written with a pointed nib and Jubilee Script written with Pilot Parallel pen (devised by Carol DuBosch) both these scripts are perfect for Christmas present labels, cards, wrapping paper etc!

Both scripts are very informal and open to your own interpretation - Jubilee is written with a broad edge Pilot Parallel pen (your dip style broad edge pens are a bit tricky for this) and TinaKwerky is written with a pointed nib!
